A Texas Credit by Examination is a test that awards high school course credit without the student taking the course. Pass it and the credit goes on the transcript as if the year had been sat. Texas law provides two routes. Credit without prior instruction — for a student who has not taken the course — falls under TEC §28.023. Credit with prior instruction, for a student who has studied the material but not received credit, falls under 19 TAC §74.24. The exams are typically administered through UT High School at UT Austin. It is used to accelerate: to skip ahead in a subject sequence, to clear a graduation requirement early, or to free a timetable slot for something else.

Most Texas districts award credit at 70% on a Credit by Exam. Some set the bar higher — Frisco ISD requires 80%. The threshold is a district decision, not a state-wide number, so confirm yours with your campus counsellor before you sit anything.
